Since 2012, Mertz Plumbing has focused on plumbing, gas fitting and hydronic systems for upscale residential homes – new and retrofit. From fixture consultation to complete design and install of complex systems, Mertz Plumbing offers comprehensive and exceptional service.

As the Mertz Plumbing reputation for expertise and quality work became known, Mertz Plumbing expanded its offerings to include work on systems installed by other companies – especially when the system was not initially installed correctly. Mertz Plumbing will assess your existing heating system and make recommendations to resolve complaints of leaks, constant maintenance bills and issues with, “it’s just not working.”

Derek Mertz studied business at MacEwan University in Edmonton, Alberta, and then decided to pursue a trade with the goal of owning his own business. He is a red seal journeyman plumber and gas fitter, but his natural ability is with people. He values integrity and believes that communication is essential for good relationships, especially business relationships. He respects people who work hard; admits when he’s made a mistake and will take steps to make it right. He can handle the most demanding client, but does expect them to keep their word — because he will.

When the company started to expand, Derek recognized the need to take on a partner. Someone he could trust. That person was his life partner, Rita Mertz. With a business degree and her own construction experience, they joined forces. She manages much of the business side, including financial and accounting staff, inventory and materials supply and is focused now on growing the service side of the company. She is organized, competent and likes to work with people who share those talents.
